ramadan is almost over

Monday, September 29th, 2008

or it’s completely over, depending on who you’re following this year. yayy for muslim unity. i really think that eventually, american muslims will fold over to the side of the fiqh council of north america’s position (the dreaded calculations)- even if that means enduring sheikh hamza’s likening of the process to the c-section […]

babies are easy.  <-(explain): compared to toddlers….(explain!)- fine, easy’s not the right word.  simple.  they’re more simple.  i feel like infants just need a constantly positive atmosphere in order to be happy and normal.  which may not actually be easy (depending on the state of the parent/caregiver), but is straightforward and simple.  that’s all.

God, i need saving.
ramadan is 2/3 over. say whaaat? where’d it all go?! i was anticipating it starting about july, and you’re telling me it’s almost over? i obviously haven’t used my time very well. last 10 days = cram time. hoping, praying, praying, praying that something i do is acceptable. the more i care, […]

the foodie in me…

“Long-term, people will see Washington as a restaurant destination, he says, where tourists plan not only which museums to visit but where to eat”

what the […]

quiet

Friday, September 12th, 2008

today i went to the masjid for friday prayers, expecting the usual din as soon as i opened the glass door: but there was none.  it was (un?)naturally…quiet!  all i heard was the sound of distant voices upstairs, and it was unnerving and pleasing at the same time.  for once, i felt like the masjid […]

modern day muslim “heroes”

Friday, September 12th, 2008

do young Muslims need (or even want…) heroes? there’s moez masud, arsalan iftikhar, hamza yusuf, countless other “movers and shakers” who we often look to at conferences, lectures, on tv as our spokespersons. do we need them? when i ask that question, it isn’t my intention to de-value these people’s contributions. but, what kind of […]

water

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

first- a prayer/thought for those in the path of ike.
today was a great day for paddling.  it was overcast all day and no rain- my favorite paddling weather, ever.  direct sunlight on water gives me migraines, and somehow i always manage to paddle with the sun right in my eyes.  so today was a blessing.  […]

transliterations are not the way!

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

i remember as a kid using transliterated arabic as a total crutch for memorizing qur’an. to the point where i would rather read the transliteration than the arabic. i knew there was something fundamentally wrong with using that way to learn.  besides, transliterations look funny anyway.
and transliterated arabic words into english in daily use?  where […]
