cold shoulders get frostbite too

October 20th, 2008

“for it’s a fool who plays it cool by making his world a little colder”?

also, it’s finally starting to feel like fall. :) layers, boots, and real leaf colors.

aside: i have this amazing ability to look shady. shady in the homeland-security type way. i mean i know the hijab is part of that, but certainly not all. so i work next to the supreme court, and decided to go see what their cafeteria food was like (so-so…it’s a cafeteria after all). i mean i guess that’s shallow of me- to go there specifically for food. surrounded by History and Justice and…justices…..and i’m there for a sandwich. anyway, i don’t like having to exert uptight body language even in “hallowed” places, so i kinda walk around like i’m at home. does that make sense? stuff like hopping off the third stair from the bottom (instead of stepping down), holding corners as you turn them, looking down instead of up at things, etc. i mean not blatantly disrespectful, just familiar. so i guess that kind of evokes a good amount of attention from guards. haha. also, you’d think tourists might try to poke their heads around corners outside the building or even venture off the old standby benches to find someplace less typical to sit, but…they really don’t. i find that surprising. it’s not just the tourists either, but, well, everyone. in a city so filled with Stuff, you’d think people would look away from placards and sidewalks a little more often. meh. more for me to see.

oh btw?

i work in dc now. still kinda weird to say it, but it’s true. i feel a little like a foreigner. and yeah, my commute is long…to say the least. but that’s alright; i’m prepared to handle that. and once i (become boring and) establish a pattern, i’ll figure out what other interesting things i can insert into the week/weekend on a regular basis. …other than the stuff i’m already doing. :P ideas are welcome.

i’ll try not to be the typical blog-about-typical-stuff kind of job holder (i’ll probably fail), but one small victory that i will mention is the parking spot i found yesterday at the park ‘n’ ride. <– whoa, i just re-read that sentence, and i’m stopping right there because it’s beyond pathetic. from now on, i order regular readers to post warning comments when i write grossly typical stuff like that. thank you in advance.

main?stream~~~

October 12th, 2008

each of us probably thinks we’re pretty normal.  mainstream.  heck i even think of myself like that sometimes.  and what is extreme, after all, right?  those extremists!  which extremists do we mean, anyway?  so you might be mainstream in your little creek and not even realize that there’s another that runs parallel to you just over that hill.  that yes, your world is usually narrow enough to see to both sides.  but long enough that there might be a waterfall or dam further ahead that you have no idea about.  or even a convergence of streams.  in fact, there are definite convergences that though you may not see, you can definitely expect.  don’t be too surprised to find that people you thought were so different from you turn out to share your own essence.

dirt

one sided, and full of profanity:

but probably way more informative than all the debates so far put together.

way too much pink

October 8th, 2008

yes, i understand that breast cancer awareness and raising funds and all that jazz is important. but do *all* those products really raise money for “the cause?” and not to be insensitive, but aren’t there like, a million other causes out there? not just cancers (of which there are many) but other real live diseases? for friggin pete’s sake, i swear i’ve seen at least 5 “global pink hijab days” go by on facebook within the last few months. i thought stuff like that was supposed to be once a year. or something.

are we really soooo in dire need of marketing colors just to get our concern up over all things environmental and cancer? oh and look at that- i just realized that Green and Pink match: maybe i can make some money of this phenomenon too!!! like a, fashion forward, donate .01% of profits to each cause, kind of event that recurs 50 times a year!!! i’m sure no one else will care that it’s mostly a gimmick.

maybe i’m just bitter. green used to be my thing, my color. and now the green movement stole it from me. people used to jokingly tell me i looked like a tree when i wore way too much green- now they ask if i’m an environmentalist. (i better not start wearing a lot of pink)

ok the point is, i’m kind of annoyed that colors somehow define causes. because traditionally in american culture, colors were for certain brands or corporations. i’m not ok with branding the things we believe in or deeply care about. it’s shallow to identify with a cause by buying a pink or green box of cereal. stop being a lazy bum and if you care, then donate to a real cause. take time out of your day to do it. better yet- LEARN ABOUT IT. talk about it. don’t just treat it like your flavor of the week.

‘get, that, dirt off yo shoulder’

the fun thing about deadpan humor is that it’s funny in stealth mode; it can cross lines that plain old funny just can’t for fear of being noticed.
