yes, i understand that breast cancer awareness and raising funds and all that jazz is important. but do *all* those products really raise money for “the cause?” and not to be insensitive, but aren’t there like, a million other causes out there? not just cancers (of which there are many) but other real live diseases? for friggin pete’s sake, i swear i’ve seen at least 5 “global pink hijab days” go by on facebook within the last few months. i thought stuff like that was supposed to be once a year. or something.
are we really soooo in dire need of marketing colors just to get our concern up over all things environmental and cancer? oh and look at that- i just realized that Green and Pink match: maybe i can make some money of this phenomenon too!!! like a, fashion forward, donate .01% of profits to each cause, kind of event that recurs 50 times a year!!! i’m sure no one else will care that it’s mostly a gimmick.
maybe i’m just bitter. green used to be my thing, my color. and now the green movement stole it from me. people used to jokingly tell me i looked like a tree when i wore way too much green- now they ask if i’m an environmentalist. (i better not start wearing a lot of pink)
ok the point is, i’m kind of annoyed that colors somehow define causes. because traditionally in american culture, colors were for certain brands or corporations. i’m not ok with branding the things we believe in or deeply care about. it’s shallow to identify with a cause by buying a pink or green box of cereal. stop being a lazy bum and if you care, then donate to a real cause. take time out of your day to do it. better yet- LEARN ABOUT IT. talk about it. don’t just treat it like your flavor of the week.
