wannabe paparazzo
i know it’s fun to take pictures of stuff. things to remember. things because they look cool. but when your picture-taking consumes whatever activity it is you’re a part of- that’s overkill. i’m convinced that nowadays, pictures do much less to jog our memories than they did before. not that i’m asking for a return to film. what i’m asking for is some deference for whatever you’re doing at the moment. spare a few moments to actually experience your experience, rather than just documenting it in pixels. one thing i will never understand is taking pictures of the food at events (i’ve probably done it too)- unless the food is a showpiece, i don’t really care. yay, beef stew? it’s ok; i understand- it’s exciting, sometimes. but when groups spend 5, 10, 15, 20 minutes just taking pictures, i can’t help but wonder- couldn’t that time have been better spent enjoying the party/wedding/hiking trail? picture taking sessions become requisite, forced, and frankly, idiotic. i mean think about it. 10 years from now, you’re going to look at all those silly group pictures and think, wow i dont even remember what i did at that event. probably nothing, because we were busy taking pictures.

I used to think photos were silly, also. Then people I know died recently. Now I take the time to shoot a few pictures now and then. No pun intended!
